In the Pasadena Courthouse This Week

This week, three high-profile Pasadena criminal cases will move forward in the Pasadena Courthouse of the Los Angeles County Superior Court. Here’s an update and profile of each of these cases.

Jury Trial for Anthony Joseph Miller, December 9

Anthony Joseph Miller, 53, is charged with sexually assaulting five women in August and September 2018, and an earlier assault sometime in 2011.

He now faces five counts of forcible rape, two counts each of forcible oral copulation, sodomy by use of force and dissuading a witness from reporting a crime, and one count each of sexual battery by restraint and false imprisonment by violence.

Miller was arrested on September 27, 2018, by Pasadena police officers after they obtained an arrest warrant resulting from the investigation of three separate sexual assault incidents reported to the police in 2018 in Pasadena and the assault in 2011.

He pleaded not guilty to the charges on October 1, 2018.

If convicted as charged, Miller faces more than 270 years to life in state prison. He remains in custody with bail set at more than $10 million.

Pretrial for Jose Antonio Santiago, December 11

Jose Antonio Santiago, 67, is charged with two felony counts – one count of murder and one count of attempted murder – for allegedly fatally stabbing a man and wounding another on September 12, 2018.

Prosecutors said Santiago allegedly stabbed Jerry Chan, 42, and Dan Trevino, 32, in the 2600 block of E. Colorado Blvd. in Pasadena. Chan was fatally stabbed and Trevino was stabbed in the leg. The defendant was arrested soon after the attack.

The felony complaint includes allegations that the defendant personally used a knife and inflicted great bodily injury.
If convicted as charged, he faces a maximum possible sentence of life in state prison.

Sentencing for Donte Antoine Fox, December 12

Donte Antoine Fox, 23, is charged with one felony count each of murder, vehicular manslaughter, hit-and-run driving resulting in death, grand theft of an automobile and driving or taking a vehicle without consent, in connection with the hit-and-run death of popular Pasadena motorcyclist Gary Oscar Chavez on October 6, 2016.

The Los Angeles County District Attorney’s office said the felony complaint includes allegations that Fox was convicted in 2016 of first-degree residential burglary.

The defendant pleaded not guilty to the charges in July 2018.

Records of the case show Fox allegedly stole a Tesla Model S 85D and later crashed into Chavez, 60. The victim died at the scene and the defendant reportedly fled and remained at large until his arrest on June 21, 2018.

Fox faces more than 36 years to life in state prison if convicted as charged. Bail is set at more than $2.1 million.
