Rescuers rushed a 9-month-old girl to a hospital, where she was listed in critical condition, after she nearly drowned in a backyard swimming pool in Pasadena on Sunday evening, authorities said.

A frantic mother called 911 about 6:30 p.m. to report her baby was unconscious after falling into the pool in the 1500 block of San Pasqual Street, Pasadena police Lt. Max Dahlstein said. The infant appeared to have wandered into the yard without her mother’s knowledge and fallen into the pool before the mother pulled her out and called for help.

The first police officers to arrive on scene found the baby unresponsive and began CPR until Pasadena Fire Department paramedics arrived to take over treatment and rush the infant to a hospital, Dahlstein said.

Officials were able to help the baby regain a pulse before turning her over to the care of doctors at Huntington Hospital, according to the lieutenant. She remained hospitalized in critical condition Sunday night.

The circumstances of the incident remained under investigation, however, there were no initial signs of foul play, Dahlstein said.
