When you think of chiropractic, you think of aching necks and lower back pain. Of creaking joints and swollen muscles. But according to Adana Moses and Dr. Christopher Vargas of the Innate Family Chiropractic, it’s more than that. “We are a family wellness chiropractic office and our specialty is actually pregnancy and pediatrics,” Moses explains. “We went through an entire certification that was completely based on how to handle pregnant women and how to adjust children from day one on, so even tiny little infants get adjustments done.”
To most people that sounds a little extreme but Moses assures that children can benefit greatly from chiropractic. “For kids when we start as young as we do, it’s more about reaching full potential and reaching full function,” she says. “When we adjust them, we impact their nervous system which then allows their body to function to its optimum, to how it’s supposed to be functioning.”
“What we want to maintain throughout their childhood is that positive brain/body connection,” Dr. Vargas shares. “So it’s constantly working with their neurology to help them maximize their true function whether it’s in school, socially with other kids.” He says the adjustment on children creates amazing results almost immediately. “Kids bounce back from things so much quicker and you see the results in a flash and it’s amazing. And their parents, their teachers, whoever, they see it in a different light than we see it in the office but when they relate that to us it’s just astounding.”
Expecting mothers can also experience an easier pregnancy through chiropractic. “[With pregnant women], we want to make sure that basically the baby’s home throughout the entire nine months is not only in proper alignment, but that everything is free-flowing to that area,” Moses says. “They will have less back pain. Some cases, some of them will not go through the morning sickness.”
While chiropractic isn’t a new science, Moses and Vargas believe most people still need to be educated in its benefits. If patients have misconceptions after visiting a chiropractor, Moses lays the blame squarely on the chiropractors. “It is completely up to the Chiropractor to educate those who come to their door,” Moses states. “We’re very big on educating our patients,” adds Vargas. So dedicated are they in educating people that they conduct Wellness Orientation Workshops every Tuesday evening.
Moses and Vargas, who met at the Cleveland Chiropractic College in Los Angeles, are enthusiastic about their new clinic. They say working with children is one of their favorite things about the practice and love the energy and fun the kids bring. “If I know that I’ve made an impact on that child and if I really turn the course around on that child, that’s all that matters. The more kids we have in here, the better,” Moses says.
