It Was a Retro Halloween at Old Pasadena Arcade Saturday

Captain America, Luigi, Zelda, and many others dressed up and came out to the Neon Retro Arcade’s Halloween Party on Saturday night. The many different costumes, spider webs, and pumpkin decorations meshed well with the arcade’s retro-ness.

“Today we have a great Halloween event going on,” said Mark Guenther, co-owner of Neon Retro Arcade. “We have different costume contests and a lot of people came through for trick-or-treating,” he added.

Guenther explained that he started the arcade with his wife, Mia Mazadiego, about a year ago. “It really grew out of a personal collection and kind of kept growing and growing,” he said, “And eventually we grew out of our garage and two storage units and it was just getting crazy. Now we’ve set up the arcade so we can share it with everyone else.”

The arcade includes over 50 classic machines such as Pac-Man, Super Mario Brothers, Donkey Kong, Space Invaders, and recently, Tron was added.

“This is THE game!” said Michael Barnet, and added that he is hoping they will eventually add Discs of Tron to the Neon Arcade collection.

Unlike most arcades, the Neon Retro Arcade does not operate on quarters. Admission costs $10 for one hour of play and that includes all the video games, pinball machines, and consoles available in the store. According to Guenther, “We have a great selection of games and you are sure to find something that brings you back to your childhood.” In his case, that would be NES’s 1987 video game, Punch-Out.

“It has two monitors and it’s really cool,” said Guenther. He invites the public to stop by and check it out.
