The U.S. women’s soccer team will kick off their World Cup victory tour with a match against the Irish national team at the Rose Bowl, Aug. 3.
The game will be USA’s first match on home soil after winning the 2019 FIFA Women’s World Cup in France on Sunday.
U.S. Soccer said the USA-Ireland game will be the fifth U.S. Women’s match at the Rose Bowl and the first in 17 years. The game also marks the third at the Rose Bowl since the U.S. won the groundbreaking 1999 Women’s World Cup, when the women’s team scored 5-4 against China, finishing with a spectacular penalty kick by Brandi Chastain.
This week, the Rose Bowl is scheduled to unveil a statue dedicated to that iconic moment in U.S. sports history of 20 years ago. Chastain’s final penalty kick was witnessed by a crowd of more than 90,000, the highest attendance ever at a women’s game.
U.S. Soccer said tickets for the USA vs. Ireland match will go on sale at 10 a.m., July 13 (see below for pre-sale and group sales information). The U.S. squad’s five-game tour continues with matches on August 29, September 3, October 3 and October 6, with opponents and venues still to be determined.
The game will be at 7 p.m., and broadcast on ESPN 2, the Rose Bowl announced.
Irish fans will have to stay up late as the contest will commence at 3 a.m. on their side of the world. Nevertheless, Ireland’s team is excited to be playing against “the best in the world,” Republic captain Katie McCabe told the BBC.
“It’s a great opportunity for us to be asked to go over to play the USA and good preparation ahead of our European Championship campaign,” McCabe said. “Also, it will be good to get the squad back together after not having seen each other in a while. It will all help towards getting us ready for the Montenegro game in September.”
The Irish national team, focused on the upcoming European Championship, plays against Montenegro in the opener at the Tallaght Stadium in Dublin on September 3, according to the Football Association of Ireland.
The championship team will head to Los Angeles on Wednesday for The ESPYs, which happens a few hours after the team’s ticker-tape parade down New York City’s Broadway.
