Long After Crystal Night, by John Herman Shaner, focuses on the Seymour Goldstein household in Beverly Hills, in 1983. Seymour attended a meeting to determine whether Jewish militants from the Jewish Defense League should be allowed to speak to his B’nai B’rith lodge. The ramifications of this meeting will confront Seymour and his family with fundamental questions about who they are, what is important in their lives, and ultimately their personal courage and convictions. Although this is a story about a Jewish family, the issues it raises are relevant to everyone – what does it mean to say that you will “never again” submit to bigotry, bias and oppression? This compelling play, emotionally resonant and full of humor, is as relevant today as it was in 1983.
