John Muir Football Team Takes Their Game Across State Lines in First Away Trip of Its Kind

Spirits were high and excitement radiated through the John Muir High School boy’s locker room in the early hours of Thursday morning as the Mustang’s varsity football team geared up to head out in a private charter bus headed to Las Vegas for their Friday game against Desert Oasis High School.

This Muir’s first ever away game that takes Mustang players across a state line.

“We took this game on because we wanted to be able to give our kids an experience outside of the San Gabriel Valley. We saw an opportunity to give our kids a chance to get out, and at the same time play a game that they love to play,” said head coach and John Muir alum Antyone Sims.

The Mustangs have a jam-packed couple of days ahead of them as they make the trek to Nevada. Sims and the staff feel that while this trip presents many opportunities, the most rewarding one is to build relationships and camaraderie among the players.

“They’ll get to know and learn about their fellow teammates. That is a really important aspect of this game,” said Sims, who also scheduled his team to have lunch with their opponents from Desert Oasis High School.

The journey to Vegas may be a frequent trip familiar to many people in the area, but is expected to be an eye-opening experience for majority of the team members.

“Most of these kids have never been outside of Pasadena, let alone California,” said Milica Protic, Muir’s Athletic Director.

One freshman player mentioned his excitement to go up against a new team after taking home a win from last week’s first season game against Compton. A senior player mentioned his desire to travel to a city and state that he has never been to before.

“The kids are ecstatic. Something like this is really good for them. Football is a brotherhood and they will learn a lot from this,”said team parent Rodrigo Resendez.

The team will be treated to watching UNLV take on Jackson State as well as getting a tour of the UNLV campus.

“I hope they get inspired from seeing college players working hard both on and off the field,” said Sims.

Sims and the team are prepared to take on Desert Oasis high school Friday night despite the heat, which is expected to linger around 100 degrees.

“We’ve got plenty of water. They’re going to appreciate coming back to California,” said Protic jokingly.

The Mustangs will be head home Saturday morning — hopefully with a win and and some stories to talk about.

“It’s a lot to take on, but to see the joy on our kids’ faces and the excitement that they have in their bodies to get out there and experience something else makes me excited,” said Sims.
