Jury Convicts Pasadena Gang Member for Shooting Death of Young Woman Outside Local Liquor Store

On August 19, 2008 shortly before 10 p.m., Pasadena police responding to a call of “shots fired” found 20-year-old Jennifer Avina-Ortega lying in a pool of blood on the sidewalk at 1821 East Villa Street, pleading for help. She died shortly thereafter.

On Friday, a Los County Superior Court jury convicted Roberto Barajas, Jr., 36, for her murder.

Police identified Barajas as the triggerman only nine days after Avina-Ortega was shot three times as she stood near a parking lot pay phone. At the time, Pasadena Police spokesperson Janet Pope-Givens said that Barajas was known to be associated with a Pasadena criminal street gang.

“Gang crimes are very difficult to investigate, typically because victims, witnesses, and other involved parties are often uncooperative,” Pasadena Chief of Police Phillip Sanchez said Sunday.

Sanchez said the case was “very complex, requiring days of testimony and evidence review.” The trial lasted nearly 8 weeks.

Corporal Bill Broghamer was the Pasadena Police Department’s lead investigator in the case.

“Broghamer and his colleagues are commended for this investigation and the final outcome, which has brought some level of closure for the Ortega family,” Sanchez said.
