The jury trial for Marquise Jackson, a Pasadena father accused of allegedly killing his own daughter almost five years ago, will begin Tuesday at the Los Angeles County Superior Court in Pasadena, the LA District Attorney’s office said.

In his arraignment on September 12, 2011, Jackson pleaded not guilty to suffocating his own daughter, Mo-Nayjah Jackson, in a Pasadena apartment in May that year.

Pasadena police investigators had earlier said he confessed to the crime, according to a report in the Los Angeles Times on August 29, 2011.

Members of the Pasadena police and fire departments came to the aid of one-year-old Mo-Nayjah in the 100 block of West Del Mar Blvd. on May 20, 2011, Pasadena Star-News reported that month.

The child was not breathing and attempts to resuscitate her were unsuccessful, police said at the time.

The girl’s family earlier said they didn’t know what had happened to the little girl which might have caused her death. Police considered the case a suspicious death and initiated an investigation.

Jackson was arrested in Lancaster by Pasadena Police officers on August 25, 2011 and charged with the murder four days later.

Jackson has been in jail since his arrest in lieu of $1 million bail.
