These difficult days, you deserve a treat – and there’s no better place we can think of than Monrovia Bakery, where their pies, breads, danish, cookies, brownies, cupcakes, eclairs,  and creampuffs are so authentically old-fashioned that Hollywood treks there to shoot period movies and television shows.

Here is a place where time and goodness have seemingly stood still. Tested and true, Monrovia Bakery serves up good old American baked goods that aren’t fancy, but are thrillingly genuine and delectable. Definitely worth the short drive.

The bakery is a Mueller family affair, operated by sisters Emma and Katherine and brother Jon. Their brother Jim, who passed away in 1992, founded the bakery in 1971. The three take great pride in the fact that everything they offer is made from scratch on the premises.

Flour, sugar and eggs are practically in the Mueller family’s blood, Katherine points out. At the back of the bakery, the siblings display pictures back to their grandfather, Charles, seen as a boy in Germany dressed as a baker and sporting a rolling pin.

Their father, Herman, started Mueller’s Bakery in Indianapolis in the early 1950’s – and you can sample some of his treats today, because some of his culinary formulae are still in use daily at Monrovia Bakery.

“We make everything on the premises,” Katherine says. “And we don’t follow trends.”

You just can’t help but feel relaxed, at home and hungry when you stroll into the bakery and take in the tasty sweets under curved glass. The place smells like heaven!

Be sure to check out the eclairs and brownies – you’ll find them rich and delicious. The eclairs are covered in fudge chocolate and stuffed with vanilla custard (whipped cream? Perish the thought!).

Behind the counter you’ll find fresh-baked breads and rolls. Under glass, a rainbow of treats! And for special events, they’ll craft custom cakes to order.

What keeps this band of bakers up early to knead the dough and fire up the ovens after all these years?

“Why, seeing our customers love our stuff!” laughs Katherine. “Seeing them smile when they see their cake – it was exactly what they wanted!”
