A 17-year-old alleged burglar who fled as police closed in on him Tuesday afternoon was bitten by a police dog after the youth refused to stop and continued trying to outrun officers.

The painful saga began after a Pasadena resident put into practice the police department mantra “See Something, Say Something” and called 911 around 1:18 p.m. to report a suspicious youth lurking outside his neighbor’s house in the 2500 block of Monte Vista Street.

The citizen then saw “the suspect jump over the neighbor’s fence and remove a window screen and attempt to force open a window,” said Pasadena police Lt. Kelly Evans.

As the citizen awaiting for the arrival of police, he witnessed the suspect attempt entry to a second window, Evans said.

When officers arrived on the scene, the suspect fled on foot south into neighboring yards. Officers set up a containment but prior to initiating their search, the suspect was seen running south across the street towards Fire Station 32, Evans said.

A K-9 officer with his dog gave chase, Evans said, and at a point the officer released the police dog.

“The K-9 bit the suspect and was able to take the suspect to the ground,” Evans said.  “After a short struggle, the suspect was taken into custody. The suspect was transported to Huntington Memorial for medical clearance and then to juvenile hall where he was booked.”

According to Evans, the juvenile is a resident of Rancho Cucamonga.
