Are you wondering why your once highly motivated employees act like they have a bad hangover since the recession? Do you know how to light a fire and renew the power of their competitive spirits? In the latest session of the rewarding Business Growth Workshops at the University Club in Pasadena, Kal Peters and Terry Lauter Comp offered smart and workable strategies to ignite the modern day workforce. Brought in by James Harwood of Total HR Management, the two partners actually illuminated the relationship between effective human resources and employee engagement.

By providing tips and tools for building healthy, high-performance organizations, Peters and Lauter have a strong track record as successful Southern California business consultants. Since the recession, Peters and Lauter showed how the engagement level of American workers has significantly dropped. At the same time, a 2013 Harvard Business Review survey of top executives revealed that “creating a high level of employee engagement” was one of the top three priorities of those polled.

Once they outlined the problem, Lauter and Comp outlined a solution by focusing on a combination of job satisfaction and job contribution. True employee engagement comes when both elements are in play and with neither being ignored. A major challenge for companies in the 21st century is how to effectively engage the Millennial Generation. Since engagement increases the higher up you go on a company ladder, the key is to learn how to engage younger employees at lower levels of seniority and management.

In order to effectively engage both millennials and other employees, Lauter and Comp illustrated the importance of knowing what they described as engagement drivers. From the perspective of employees, engagement drivers are elements provided by employers that inspire them to excel beyond Microsoft Office competence.

Such engagement drivers include the following:

1. Role clarity and an understanding of the why behind the work
2. Regular feedback about performance and how to improve
3. Training and development opportunities that promote growth
4. Workplace-focused activities to improve relationships with and connections between co-workers

By focusing on such engagement drivers, Lauter and Comp believe companies can ignite the fire of success within the modern day workforce. Although engagement might sound like the latest business buzzword, in truth, it’s far from it. Instead, engagement is the fuel that allows a company to prosper in a post-recession economy that is competitive and hungry. Once again, with Kal Peters And Terry Lauter Comp’s presentation on employee engagement, the Business Growth Workshop series at the University Club has proved to be a valuable addition to the Pasadena professional landscape
