LCPC Parent Education is excited to announce Kathy Kovalcik as its 2018 Shining Star award recipient! The recipient of this accolade exemplifies Parent Ed’s commitment to strengthening families both locally and globally and is awarded to a person who “has had a significant impact on the community–especially its families & children.” Kathy, a mother of 2 boys, has been involved in Parent Ed since 1997. Since that time, she has attended numerous classes, served on the volunteer board from 2003 and 2005, and has been a member of the Parent Ed Ministry Support Team (which serves as the program’s advisory board) since 2005. She has also previously served as a LCPC deacon.
In addition to her many commitments with LCPC, Kathy has been highly involved in the community as a faithful leader and extraordinary volunteer. She has contributed countless hours to La Canada schools through their on-campus beautification programs and the PTA, volunteered as a den leader for the local Boy Scout troop, served as the hospitality chair for countless organizations, and contributed as both a team parent and sponsor for local baseball teams. Kathy has also been an active member of the Flintridge Guild of Children’s Hospital of Los Angeles since 2014. Kathy was the recipient of the prestigious California State PTA Service Award in 2009 and the Continuing Service Award in 2016.
In addition to Kovalcik’ s heart for service, she also is known through the area as an exceptional baker and hostess who generously distributes her love language of hospitality to anyone in need. Anne Bierling, Director of LCPC Parent Ed, said: “Kathy is truly one of the most thoughtful and generous people I know. I have known Kathy for 11 years-and have observed her consistently giving and encouraging to those around her. She is like an Angel of Giving.”
Carol Van Citters, current Parent Ed Board Chair, said of Kathy, “Kathy is one of the most quietly generous people I have ever met, altruistically on the sidelines always looking for where the need is greatest and quietly taking care to fill the void, never expecting a thing in return. It’s a kind of life ethic with her. She is a rare bird in my book.”
Jan Roberts, who has been Kathy’s Parent Ed instructor for many years, added; “Kathy is an endlessly thoughtful person. Her heart overflows with goodness, generously giving her time and resources wherever she sees a need. She works quietly behind the scenes, not seeking recognition or affirmation. Her joy and rewards are in the giving. LCPC Parent Education has been blessed over and over again by Kathy’s generosity. Kathy shines brightly—she is an absolute gem.”
For 39 years, LCPC’s Parent Education Program has maintained its legacy of quality education and reputable staff. The program is supported in part by its annual benefit to be held on Saturday, February 24, 2018 at Bowlmor, Pasadena.
