La Canada Presbyterian Church (LCPC)’s Parent Education is excited to announce Joanna Hurst and Lynne Graves as its 2019 Shining Stars! This annual accolade exemplifies Parent Ed’s commitment to strengthening families both locally and globally and is awarded to persons who have had “a significant impact on the community–especially its families and children.” Director of LCPC Parent Education, Anne Bierling, said “both of these women have been local icons of exemplary service spanning the four decades of our program– so it was very apropos that they would be our 40th Anniversary Recipients.”

Kicking off their 40th Anniversary weekend, a special Shining Star Event was held on Saturday evening, Nov 2nd, at the home of Kevin & Heather Ehrhart to honor Joanna Hurst and Lynne Graves. The evening, chaired by Ashley Barrett and Angela Isoghololian, hosted 80 guests who enjoyed appetizers, drinks, and live guitar music.

Anne Bierling presented the winners by announcing their impressive service repertoires and inviting the guests to share in their gratitude of the honorees. Bierling also presented gifts on behalf of the LCPC Parent Ed Board, Staff, and Ministry Support Team. Diamond/ruby earrings, that had been donated to the program, were raffled with all proceeds going to the Founders’ Scholarship Fund–that provides scholarships so that the program is never cost prohibitive to anyone.

Hurst has been involved in Parent Ed since 1981. When her youngest son Scott was in the 3-year-old class, she began her journey as a teaching assistant in parent ed, because “she wasn’t sure how she would survive without the program.” For the next 20 years, Hurst was privileged to serve parents and children in LCPC Parent Ed’s Toddlers, Twos, and 3-4’s Classes in a program that she said, “impacted her parenting, her marriage, and her life…and that she holds dear to her heart till this day.”

While living in La Canada and employed at LCPC Parent Ed as both a TA and co-instructor, Hurst was also blessed to be to a volunteer in the local schools, hold PTA positions, be an art docent, lead Girl Scout troops, produce LCHS school musicals, tour with the school choirs and drama students, and produce over 13 years of musicals with Foothill Summer Theatre.

After moving to Utah in 2009 she was hired by the Washington County School District as a para-professional in their Special Ed Preschool Program. Being in the education field she was blessed to find employment with a new educational toy store opening in the area. At the Learning Express of St. George, Utah, she found the fellowship she had missed from her Parent Ed years. Now a manager of Knowledge Bound, a store for teachers and parents, she continues to bless families. Joanna commented that “she has been blessed and honored by her Parent Ed Family and has made memories that will last forever.” Joanna is a mom of Sarah (38), Jamie (36) and Scott (31) and has been married to husband, Scott, for 41 years.

Graves has been volunteering in the LaCanada community for decades and involved with LCPC Parent Ed over 20 years. She has been on their Volunteer Board for 19 years (a board record) and their Ministry Support Team for 15 years. She served as board chair for two different terms and as the MST chair for 10 years–as well as chairing several fund raisers. She has also been a huge volunteer for the La Canada Presbyterian Church serving as an elder, Global Leadership Coordinator, and working on the Stewardship Team over a span of 20 years.

Additionally, Graves has volunteered with the Pasadena Showcase House of the Arts, Business Network International, National Charity League, Member of Meeting Professionals International, Plan Ahead Events Ad Fund Board, LCHS Girls/Boys Basketball Parents Club, LCHS PTA, LCHS 7/8 PTA, Glendale Area Panhellenic Alumnae Association, Girl Scout Troop 7511, California Apartment Association, Paradise Canyon Elementary PTA, and the La Canada United Methodist Children Center. She is mom of Amber (20) and Ryan (18) and wife of Rick Graves for 34 years.

Graves summed up her experience by saying: “It’s been my pleasure to be part of LCPC Parent Education for the past 19 years! The friendships, support, and Christian community have provided my family and I with more than I ever imagined. I love this incredible ministry called LCPC Parent Education.”
