La Cañada Presbyterian Church to Offer ‘Glad Tidings’ in Dec. 15 Concert

The Christmas story will unfold in a glorious multimedia program, with a 50-piece orchestra and 60-voice choir – and KABC-TV weatherman Dallas Raines providing the narration – when La Cañada Presbyterian Church presents “Glad Tidings” on Sunday, Dec. 15, at 2:00 p.m. in the LCPC Sanctuary.

“To most of us, the spirit and meaning of Christmas are summed up in the music of the season,” said Jack Lantz, the church’s Director of Music and Worship Arts, who will conduct the concert. “More than any other holiday, Christmas music truly ‘gets us into the spirit,’ and we invite the community to join us in this special celebration of Jesus’ birth.”

“Glad Tidings,” arranged by Randol Alan Bass, is a musically innovative medley of familiar carols and Christmas songs, knitted together with a narration of Mary and Joseph’s journey to Bethlehem, the birth of Jesus, the appearance of the angels, shepherds and wise men, and the angel’s proclamation of peace and goodwill to all. Included in the narration is the moving poem, “One Solitary Life.”

Raines will include that in his narration. Fans of his animated reports on Eyewitness News broadcasts may not know that in his youth he was a second-chair violinist, which prompted his deep love of classical music and singing.

Because of the generosity of the newly established Mae Douglas Memorial Fund, the concert will be presented free of charge. A free-will offering will be received to help defray extra expenses.

The program will feature the beloved carols of Christmas: “Joy to the World,” “The First Noel,” “O Come All Ye Faithful,” “O Little Town of Bethlehem,” “Away in a Manger,” “We Three Kings,” “Silent Night” and many others. The choir and orchestra will also present “The Angels’ Carol” and “Candlelight Carol,” two John Rutter melodies that are fast gaining popularity in the Christmas songbook.

LCPC’s concerts are renowned for the multimedia features, and this will be no exception, with movie excerpts, videos and classic Christmas images projected on a screen above the choir and orchestra. One of the videos will be of New York’s Radio City Music Hall Rockettes performing “The Parade of the Wooden Soldiers” to music played live by the orchestra.

On some of the familiar carols, the audience will be invited to sing along with the choir and orchestra.
