Lack of Offense Hurts Men’s Soccer, Season Ends

The Pasadena City College men’s soccer team finished the 2014 season on November 14 with a 2-1 loss at Long Beach City College. Forgive the Lancers for wanting to turn the page quickly to get to next year after an especially disappointing second half to the season.

Edgar Menendez scored the Lancers’ only goal a minute into the second half.

PCC placed seventh in the South Coast Conference and went 5-13-3 overall with a 3-10-1 league record. The five wins is the lowest in the five years that head coach Edgar Manvelyan has directed the program.

The team’s lack of offense was a big reason the squad lost nine of its last 10 games and the last six consecutively. PCC scored just five goals, never tallying more than one, in the final six conference games. The Lancers went 1-11-2 this season in games where they were limited to one or less goals. They were 4-2-1 in games scoring two or more.

After twice reaching 4-goal efforts early in pre-conference play, PCC would score just 14 goals in its final 15 games.

PCC’s top goal scorer this season was defender George Barba, who had four goals. Forward Victor Menchaca led the team in overall points with 11 on two goals and seven assists. A year ago, the team had three different players reach 10 or more goals.

The Lancers scored 15 less goals than in 2013 when they reached the Southern California Regional Playoffs and took third place in the SCC.
