The Lake Avenue Community Foundation, now called Stars after a name change in July, is holding its annual “Stars for Tomorrow” benefit on Thursday, September 20, at a private Pasadena estate.

An announcement on the Stars website said the event will be held in an “elegant backyard setting at a beautiful Pasadena estate” and will begin at 6 p.m. with a social hour and silent auction.

“Come celebrate with us! We have so much to celebrate and be grateful for, and our students and supporters are at the top of the list! Our event committee is hard at work putting together a fabulous event for you,” the announcement said.

The benefit supports the foundation’s Stars mentoring program, which matches students and mentors – from elementary through high school – and provides them with the support, encouragement and resources that will help foster “a nurturing and meaningful relationship,” and other programs in support of the youth.

As a faith-based nonprofit partnering with the Lake Avenue Church on education issues, Stars unleashes the “God-given potential of children, youth, and families in vulnerable communities, providing the tools necessary to thrive academically, emotionally, economically and spiritually,” the foundation’s mission states.

In July, the foundation changed its name to “Stars: Illuminate, Educate, Advocate” to avoid confusion with the Lake Avenue Church and to correct people’s assumption that the organization is a grant-giving foundation.

“Stars will continue to be a faith-based organization with a strong partnership with Lake Avenue Church, and will continue to have the same vision, mission, and programs, but by clarifying the confusion we will be better positioned to take advantage of funding opportunities,” Stars Executive Director Nancy Stiles said during the name change.

Stars also sponsors a Kids Reading to Success program, and Stars College Support and Stars Summer Enrichment programs.

The “Stars for Tomorrow” benefit is open for sponsorship and underwriting opportunities so that more of the proceeds of the event will go directly to their youth-support programs.  For information about sponsorships and underwriting, visit, or contact Kim Chinen at (626) 817-4505 or email
