Lane Closures on Colorado Street Bridge for Emergency Fencing Continue This Week

A city official said Sunday that temporary lane closures on the Colorado Street Bridge to allow for the completion of emergency fencing will continue from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. this week, probably through Wednesday.

The bridge will not be fully closed. Rather, traffic control personnel will coordinate alternating traffic flows across a single open lane.

Pasadena City Manager Steve Mermell ordered the installation of the fencing along the entire length of the bridge in an effort to curb suicides at the historic structure.

Mermell’s decision came after months of debate about a park and public bathroom planned beneath the bridge brought the topic of the suicides into the public spotlight.

On September 3, shortly after a 14-hour marathon talk-down of a potential suicide jumper, Mermell announced that 10-foot-tall, one-inch mesh chain link fencing would be erected along the entire length of the bridge and that access to the outer ledge from the ends of the bridge would be secured.

Alternate routes across the Arroyo Seco are suggested, said City spokesperson Lisa Derderian.
