LBCC Outlasts Women’s VB in 5

Long Beach City College stopped the Pasadena City College women’s volleyball team’s 2-match win streak Friday in defeating the Lancers in five sets. The Vikings downed PCC, 26-24, 14-25, 25-21, 20-25, 15-6, at Hutto-Patterson Gymnasium. It was the first time this season that the Lancers played a match to five games.

The Lancers (2-10, 2-3 in the SCC) again were led by frosh outside hitter Lahiz Longobardi, who posted 23 kills, hit an outstanding .477, and also led the team in digs with 17. The Brazilian international student didn’t make an attack error until late in the fourth set.

Middle blocker Chy’annea Hodges added 13 kills, libero Sabrina Takeuchi made 17 digs, and Eugenia Mendez had 15 digs. Michelle Boyd served five aces to go with six kills.

LBCC (6-8, 3-2) was paced by Bra’shawnda Byrd with 23 kills and Chanel Brown’s 19 kills.

Both teams made numerous errors over the first four sets, but in the fifth game, the Lancers struggled the most as they committed five attack errors, two serve mistakes and a ball-handling error for match point.

The Lancers go back on the HP Gym home court on Wednesday, Oct. 22 in a 6 p.m. SCC match against Los Angeles Harbor College.
