Let Those Gardens Grow! City’s Free City Mulch Program Restarted

Backyard gardeners in Pasadena can avail themselves once again of free mulch material for their gardens from the City’s Department of Public Works, which resumed the popular Mulch Give-Away Program on February 10.

City Manager Steve Mermell said two sites are open for Pasadena residents to pick up mulch from. The program is a yearly activity where the City helps recycle matter from trees that have been removed, and turns it into mulch that helps control weeds, retains moisture in the soil and adds a finishing touch to garden landscapes.

“By mulching and re-purposing tree trimmings from City trees, we divert material from our landfill and reduce carbon emissions from truck trips to the landfill,” Mermell said.

For the 2017 Mulch Give-Away Program, the Public Works Department will provide mulch for free at Victory Park, located at 2575 Paloma Street, specifically at the southern parking lot off Paloma, on March 10, April 7, May 5, June 2, July 14, August 11, September 8, October 6 and November 3.

The other location for free mulch is at Robinson Park, located at 1081 N. Fair Oaks Avenue, which will give away mulch at the southern parking lot off N. Fair Oaks on February 24, March 24, April 21, May 19, June 16, July 28, August 25, September 22, October 20 and November 17.

Residents can pick up mulch from those two locations during park hours from 6 a.m. through 10 p.m. while supplies last.

Residents are advised to bring a shovel, containers, gloves and eye protection when collecting mulch.
