Letter to the Editor: Good to Great?

Pasadena Unified School District’s mantra is “Good to Great.” Sounds good, right? Except, that while the teachers at Daniel Webster School are a highly qualified, dedicated group of educators who are passionate about the work they do with their students, they are not fairly compensated by PUSD. Many of the teachers have been at Webster for several years bringing their expertise and loyalty to countless families. Pasadena’s teachers are among the lowest paid teachers in the county, with even the highest paid teachers ranking 43 out of 47. PUSD seems to ignore the fact that we are in a teacher shortage and that they will have difficulty attracting and retaining highly qualified teachers without offering a comparable salary increase.

Unfortunately, there are teachers at our school that are looking for employment elsewhere. They feel forced to leave the students, staff, and community that they love, due to financial pressures and the stressful environment that will be created by the District’s desire to transfer and reassign teachers to other school sites at will. To be a great teacher in a great school district means to be respected, valued, and compensated fairly for the demanding work that we do every day. With a shortage of teachers and a District that demonstrates little respect for its teachers, one has to wonder whether PUSD is serious about “Our Children. Learning Today. Leading Tomorrow.”
