The public is invited to join the City of Pasadena’s Human Relations Commission and the Pasadena Martin Luther King Community Coalition for “Rekindling the Light of Peace,” on Saturday, January 11, 10:00 a.m. at the Jackie Robinson Community Center, 1020 North Fair Oaks Avenue.

Now in its 24th year, this free event features guest speakers, music, and poetry readings, and is a prelude to the celebrations that occur on the national holiday honoring Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

This year’s keynote speaker is Dr. Terrence Roberts. Dr. Roberts is one of the Little Rock Nine, a group of nine African American students who enrolled at Central High School in Little Rock, Arkansas in 1957. Their attendance at the school was a test of Brown vs. Board of Education of Topeka, a landmark 1954 Supreme Court ruling that declared segregation in public schools unconstitutional.

In 1999, he and the other individuals of the Little Rock Nine were awarded the Congressional Gold Medal by President Bill Clinton.
