Longtime Pasadena Teacher Sues, Alleging She Was Fired Because of Her Age

A 72-year-old former teacher in Pasadena has sued her ex-employer, St. Andrew Catholic School, and the Archdiocese of Los Angeles, alleging she was fired after complaining that she was being bullied by supervisors because of her age.

Cynthia Delange filed the case at the Los Angeles Superior Court lawsuit alleging wrongful termination, discrimination because of her age, harassment and retaliation, after 49 years as a teacher, a report by City News Service said earlier.

In the suit, CNS reported, Delange said she began working as an elementary school teacher at St. Andrew Catholic School in 1967. The school is located at 42 Chestnut Street in Pasadena.

Delange taught grades two through seven, her students spanning several generations of families, and has become a “pillar in the Catholic educational community” because of her longevity, the suit said.

The suit said Delange has been a loyal and devoted employee and her work performance “has been at all times above-average,” but when a new principal took over in 2015, she was told the school did not have the money to continue paying her salary, and that “maybe it was time for her to retire.”

At the same time, the suit alleged, the principal was offering salary hikes to younger teachers.

The suit said Delange refused to retire early, despite alleged bullying, and “resisted the mounting pressure and harassment related to her age.”

The report said Delange also accused the principal and one of her supervisors of allegedly retaliating against her and devised a scheme “to rid itself of plaintiff, its eldest educator, under the guise of a forced retirement.”

The suit also related an incident in October 2015 when the supervisor allegedly embarrassed her in front of students by suggesting her teaching abilities were poor. Delange complained about the incident, but neither the school nor the archdiocese took corrective action against the supervisor, the suit said.

On May 20, the principal allegedly told Delange her teaching position for the upcoming school year would not be renewed.
The suit alleged that “because plaintiff would not succumb to harassing behavior by her supervisors, defendants unlawfully terminated her employment.”

City News Service said a spokeswoman for the archdiocese refused to comment on the case.
