Man Detained by Police for Reportedly Brandishing A Knife Dies At Hospital

UPDATES [9:27 a.m.]

• Pasadena Police Commander John Perez said the man who died had not been arrested, but was being questioned by officer responding to calls of a man brandishing a knife

• Perez said there was no use of force by officers against the man.

• The man became unresponsive after he was placed on a gurney for transport to a local hospital. The man was not handcuffed at that time, Perez said.

• No knife was located on the man or in the vicinity of the incident.

 

At approximately 1:23 am, Pasadena Police Dispatch received a call from employees at a fast food restaurant in the 1400 block of E. Colorado Blvd reporting that there was a man inside the restaurant armed with a knife and refusing to leave.

The man also called dispatch while inside the restaurant and said he was holding a knife. Officers stopped the subject at the corner of Hill Ave. and Colorado Blvd.

Paramedics were requested due to symptoms he was displaying.

As the man was placed on the gurney, he became unresponsive. He was taken to a local area hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Police say the man was a Latino in his late 40’s. No further identification has been released.
