A distraught man carrying a knife and stalking his wife who burst into a local counseling office on North Fair Oaks Avenue Tuesday afternoon reportedly stabbed himself in the neck when confronted by police.

He was rushed to a local hospital and is expected to survive, according to Lt. Pete Hettema.

Authorities said that Luis Olvera, 29, a Pasadena resident, initially fled the Peace Over Violence office at 892 N. Fair Oaks Avenue after brandishing a knife and demanding to see his wife. Counselors and clients reportedly retreated and took cover.

Police searched the area for him but as they did so Olvera returned to the counseling office, Hettema said.

Officers confronted Olvera there, but he reportedly refused to drop the knife or surrender.

A Taser and other nonlethal weapons were deployed but Olvera managed to stab himself before being taken into custody, Hettema said.

Olvera was treated at a local hospital and transferred to the County’s Inmate Reception Center in Los Angeles. He is being held in lieu of $50,000 bail, according to online booking records.
