Man Who Died in Solo Car Crash Near Rose Bowl Saturday Identified by Coroner’s Official

Loyola High School in Los Angeles said on its Facebook that with “very deep sadness we share the news that Physics Teacher and Coach Michael Lew ’86 was tragically killed in a car accident.”

The man who died in a single-vehicle crash into a tree near the Rose Bowl early Saturday morning has been identified by a Coroner’s official as 49-year-old Michael Dennis Lew of Los Angeles.

Yesterday, Loyola High School in Los Angeles said on its Facebook that with “very deep sadness we share the news that Physics Teacher and Coach Michael Lew ’86 was tragically killed in a car accident.”

The collision which killed Lew was reported Saturday morning as a traffic collision rescue with trapped victims near Seco Street and West Drive at about 5 a.m.

Arriving firefighters extricated the driver and doused a small fire in the car’s engine. They found no other victims.

Lew was determined to have succumbed to his injuries at the scene.

The Loyola High School community was said to be in mourning Saturday and Sunday.

On Twitter, one former Loyola student, Dominick Trageser, tweeted “I will always remember Michael Lew’s class as one of the most engaging and fun environments I’ve ever been in. You will be missed.”
