Thursday and Friday, March 8th and 9th, from 5:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m., the Advanced Drama Department of Marshall Fundamental Secondary School, led by Caroline Sandrew, is putting on their very first Spring Arts Festival to showcase the talents of students involved in the visual and performing arts!

Caroline Sandrew initially sought to put together a short play festival, but together with Ms. Audrey Green, Assistant Principal of Activities they decided to expand the event to a festival to showcase all of the arts.  This event will be highlighted with the Drama Department featuring their rendition of the Shakespearean tragedy, Richard III!

Ms. Sandrew isn’t the only one contributing to the coordination of this event.

According to Ms. Sandrew, “The Arts portion fell into my lap, and I did not want to spread myself too thin with Richard III and Grease [production April 5th thru 7th]. I wanted to be sure visual arts also got the attention it deserves, since it is called an arts festival! I have a technical theatre class, and some very motivated and organized students! What better experience for them to organize and assist in the coordination of an event such as this?”

Drama and Stage Tech students Emily Corona and Marilyn Moya were given the opportunity to string out some creative ideas of their own. Corona and Moya “took care of rounding up art from teachers, advertising, and scheduling rooms for showcasing! … It would not be nearly the same nor as successful without Emily Corona and Marilyn Moya!”

Accompanying the arts and performances will be food and concessions, including pizza and boba, by which the proceeds will flow directly into the Drama Department Fund. Marshall families and students are encouraged to attend this year’s Spring Arts Festival to help and support our art-oriented and well-versed students, as they have devoted much of their time and passion to the event. Sword-fighting, drama and powerful performances will be put on in “Richard III” as he ventures on to obtain his beloved crown. However, he may have to face the harsh consequences of his actions. Come and see this beloved Shakespearean tragedy play out while enjoying scrumptious food and student-made art. See you there!

Marshall Fundamental High School’s Academy for the Creative Industries provides students with the opportunity of incorporating an art track of their interest — whether it be Dance, Music, Visual Arts, or Drama — into their core education and academia. This The Visual and Performing Arts Department is directed by Lanisha Kelly, Assistant Principal at Marshall Fundamental.
