Sparking a lifelong love for reading is at the core of Mayfield Junior School’s annual book fair, and the 2019 version “Peace, Love & Books” lived up to its billing.

Starting off the six-day celebration were visits from two New York Times bestselling authors Karina Yan Glaser ’94, the creator of the “Vanderbeeker” book series, and Mac Barnett, the pen behind nearly 40 books including “Kid Spy,” “Extra Yarn” and the “Terrible Two” series. Yan Glaser is a contributing editor at Book Riot, the largest independent book media company in North America. Barnett’s books have been translated into more than 30 languages and sold more than two million copies worldwide.

Both Yan Glaser and Barnett shared with MJS students their journeys to becoming authors and tips to produce their best writing and how to unleash creativity.

Barnett provided fifth-grade students a look-in to his creative process during an interactive workshop. He encouraged students to combine writing genres to produce new and exciting types of stories. Following the exercise, students shared their works featuring mashups of different plots.

A question and answer session followed each visit.

Yan Glaser, currently a resident of Harlem in New York City, attended Mayfield from sixth to eighth grade. She credits longtime MJS faculty instructor, Penny Wong, for providing her tools and methods to unlock her creativity for the first time. While on campus Glaser took the opportunity to share her gratitude with Wong.

“You inspired me,” said Yan Glaser.

The events continued with the opening of the Book Fair featuring a wide array of books for purchase, the Parents’ Book Brunch, and the popular Book Fair Family Night. “Peace, Love & Books” concluded with the time-honored tradition of Rise and Read with Family and Friends.

Tatiana Guyer and Beth Stavros, Mayfield’s librarians, along with a dedicated committee of parent volunteers chaired by Karina Arabolaza and Cristina Romero, coordinated the book fair that strives to grow every year.

“Our goal is to provide opportunities for our students to explore creative avenues to in turn help find their own voice. Books do that, and inspiration is everywhere,” said Guyer.

Founded in 1931 by the Society of the Holy Child Jesus, Mayfield Junior School is a leading Catholic Independent school serving kindergarten to eighth-grade students.

Mayfield is distinguished by the Holy Child educational philosophy of Cornelia Connelly, the Society’s founder. Connelly’s pioneering belief of developing the whole child as an intellectual, spiritual, creative, and athletic person set the standard for Mayfield nearly 90 years ago. Located adjacent to historic Old Pasadena, Mayfield’s kindergarten, elementary, and middle school educational program best prepares students for high school and beyond.
