The Pasadena City College men’s soccer team snapped a 3-game losing streak Friday in defeating El Camino College-Compton Center, 2-1, at Robinson Stadium. PCC’s record went up to 5-7-3 overall and 3-4-1 in South Coast Conference play.

The Lancers were outshout by the Tartars, 20-13, as it was a busy afternoon for PCC goalie David Orellana. The freshman made eight saves while Compton’s goalie Robert Garcia was equally strong, making some spectacular stops in keeping the game close.

PCC struck early thanks to an ill-advised decision by Garcia, who tried to beat PCC forward Victor Menchaca to a loose ball at the top of the goalie box. Menchaca beat Garcia to the ball and then passed to a wide-open Christian Palacios, who tapped in a goal in the 12th minute. In the 25th minute, defender George Barba lined a corner kick that was perfectly placed as fellow defender Kris Carvajal deflected into the net for a 2-0 Lancers’ lead.

Compton cut the lead to one on a goal by Alan Rodriguez in the 44th minute. From that point on, both teams had opportunites but neither connected in a scoreless second half.

The Lancers travel to face state No. 5-ranked Mt. San Antonio on Tuesday, Oct. 28 in a 5 p.m. conference match. PCC handed the Mounties a 1-0 defeat in their first meeting on October 3.
