As part of the collective community campaign to raise awareness on issues surrounding the Arroyo Seco, Pasadena Mayor Terry Tornek is following up his first informal “Walk with the Mayor” with three more such treks as part of the city’s One Arroyo initiative.

The “Walks with the Mayor” will take place at 8 a.m. on Thursday, September 28 in the Central Arroyo beginning at the Devil’s Gate Dam in Pasadena at the trail head near West Drive and Washington Boulevard; at 9 a.m. on Saturday, October 14 in the Lower Arroyo at the Casting Pond Entrance in Lower Arroyo Seco Park just off South Arroyo Boulevard and 8 a.m. and on Thursday, October 26 in the Central Arroyo at the Rose Bowl loop (meeting place will be at Rose Bowl Gate A under the marquee).

During the walk, Pasadena residents are encouraged to ask the Mayor questions as he explains the opportunities and challenges associated with improving the 1,000-acre Arroyo Seco, a mostly natural area that runs along the west side of Pasadena, La Cañada Flintridge, Altadena and South Pasadena.

Mayor Tornek held his first of four walks through the Arroyo Seco last week in Pasadena’s Hahamongna Watershed Park.

During that walk, Pasadena residents raised several issues before the Mayor, such as tenants and contracts, the presence of the nearby Jet Propulsion Laboratory and the proposed clean out of sediment behind Devil’s Gate Dam by the county of Los Angeles.

Also joining Mayor Tornek in the walks are members of the Arroyo Advisory Group who are studying concepts, are engaged in fundraising and are looking at ways to improve the Arroyo Seco area. Members of the Group includes former Pasadena Mayor Bill Bogaard and Rose Bowl Operating Company board member Doug Kranwinkle, who also co-chairs the group.

The advisory group will be hosting a One Arroyo Day on November 18. It also plans to present a report to the City Council sometime in December.
