Mt. SAC Beats Women’s Soccer In Extra Time, 1-0

Unlike any other sport, soccer is the only one where the conclusion of games are directly tied to a referee's whistle. Games are hand-timed and some extend beyond the intended regulation 90 minutes due to injury stoppages. Players, coaches, and fans can get guess when game time is over, but the reality is the referee's game watch and subsequent blown whistle is the ultimate end game.

On Tuesday, the Pasadena City College women's soccer team did everything it could to preserve a 0-0 tie, but time was not on its side at Robinson Stadium. In extra stoppage time, Mt. San Antonio handed the Lancers a heart-breaking defeat, 1-0, on a goal by Abby Colmaneres. Hailey Havelind made an aggressive play, taking the ball from a PCC defender and crossing a perfect pass to Colmaneres for the game-winning goal.

Lancers' goalie Angelique Ulmer was brilliant in defeat, making a season-high 13 saves as Mt. SAC outshot a short-handed PCC squad, 21-4. The Lancers were down to one available sub late in the game with yet another injury, this time to defender Hilary Kahn.

Despite the loss, the Lancers (5-8-3 overall, 3-5-1 in South Coast Conference play) received strong play throughout from a make-shift lineup. Nine players from the opening-day roster were not available for the contest. Ulmer, Michelle Morales, Carmen Aguilar, Melissa Garcia, Karina Costilla, Christine Salas, Ani Hemelians, Talin Kojababian, Elena Heuze were players who stepped up their performance in holding back Mt. SAC's attack.

The Mounties (11-4, 7-2 in the SCC) pressed PCC in the final 10 minutes and extra time as twice Ulmer prevented goals with spectacular tipaways.

"The way we have played the past few games without most of our corps top players says a lot about our overall depth," PCC head coach Reggie Rivas said. "We have ladies that didn't get as much playing time earlier in the year like Mabelyn Morales, Margarita Munoz, Arianna Nunez, and Heuze. Yet we gave Mt. SAC everything we had and nearly came away with a tie. Tough end, but a great effort. Ulmer played her heart out in goal again."

PCC next plays at El Camino College on Friday, Oct. 31 in a 1 p.m. conference game.
