First United Methodist Church will begin its fifth season of free, monthly concerts on Saturday, October 20, 2018 at 4:00 p.m. with a concert called, “Beethoven and His Mentors.” The program will include Mozart’s Exsultate Jubilate, featuring soprano Lisa Eden; Haydn’s Cello Concerto in C, featuring cellist David Garrett; and Beethoven’s Piano Concerto No. 2, featuring pianist Junko Ueno Garrett. All three pieces will be accompanied by a chamber orchestra under the direction of Gregory Norton, the church’s Minister of Music.
Even a genius like Beethoven needed musical heroes. His life bridged the Classical music era of Haydn and Mozart and the newer Romantic style to come in the 19th century. This program pays homage to the musical giants upon whose “artistic shoulders” Beethoven stood.
Now in its fifth season, the monthly Third @ First concerts present a wide array of music performed by the church’s musicians and visiting artists on the third Saturday afternoon of each month. The music of Ludwig van Beethoven (1770-1827) forms a thread through this year’s programs. The season will offer a generous sampling of his music ranging from the second piano concerto, begun when he was a teenager, to later works from among his many piano, cello and chamber music pieces. Pianist Junko Ueno Garrett is the Program Coordinator for the series.
First United Methodist Church is located at 500 E. Colorado Blvd, in the Playhouse District of Pasadena. Off-street parking is available behind the church and may be accessed from Green Street (a one-way street that runs east; access from Los Robles Avenue).
