The Playhouse District Association is unveiling a new series of crosswalk designs installed at three locations in the Pasadena Playhouse District titled “River Migration” by local artist Hataya Tubtim. The crosswalk art program, the first of its kind in the City of Pasadena, now features pedestrian art at fourteen crosswalks in the District.

The new crosswalk design locations are at the corner of Walnut and Oakland, at Union and Mentor, and at Madison and Green.

The distinct design of River Migration uses the movement of fish over three crosswalk sites to echo the movement of people moving through the urban environment. The art can be seen clearly both day and night while providing for pedestrian safety by demarcating the crosswalk area.

The commissioned artist, Hataya Tubtim, is a faculty member at Art Center College of Design. Her work includes themes of community, nature and culture and is inspired by histories within places as well as the outcomes of social exchange.

“This program brings art to the streets, beautifies the pedestrian environment, and reinforces the cultural richness of the District,” said Playhouse District Executive Director, Erlinda Romo.

These new art installations bring the total to fourteen artistic crosswalks in the District. The other pedestrian street artworks titled Moonwalk by local artist and designer Cynthia Luna were installed in 2011 and have been a success.

The Playhouse District Association (PDA) is a California non-profit formed in 1995, which serves to enhance and promote the Playhouse District economic vitality as Pasadena’s center for culture, commerce and community.
