New Details Emerge About Victims in Last Night’s Park Shooting

The two men found shot in Washington Park about 6 p.m. Wednesday night have been described by Pasadena police Lt. John Luna as black men, one a 26-year-old homeless man and the other a 30-year-old La Crescenta resident. Each received “very significant injuries,” Luna said, but remain alive Thursday morning.

The incident unfolded after patrol officers heard gunfire and almost simultaneously were summoned to a disturbance at the park in the 700 block of East Washington Boulevard, Pasadena police Lt. Tracey Ibarra said.

As officers arrived they encountered a number of people running and driving away from the parking lot on the northern end of the park, she said.

The two injured men were found as officers swept through the park.

Pasadena Fire Dept. spokesperson Lisa Derderian said that the two victims were transported to a local hospital in critical condition. Lt. Ibarra said she did not know the full extent of their injuries.

Police immediately established a perimeter to search for suspects and gather evidence.

Washington Boulevard was closed between El Molino and Hudson Avenues almost immediately after the shooting and remained shutdown to traffic until about 1:35 a.m.

Ibarra said police could not release any information about a suspect or suspects, or the identities of the victims.

Pasadena Now has been told the name of a victim by a friend, but will not disclose the information until confirmed by police.

Speaking Wednesday night, Ibarra said the motive and circumstances of the shooting were unclear. It is not known if the attack was gang-related, she said.

Neighbors nearby reported hearing the gunfire on social media.

“I live a few blocks away on Lake [Avenue],” wrote Brent Wadsworth. “I heard the shots – sounded like an automatic, about 10 to 15 rounds . I drove over, they had a large perimeter set up.”

“I thought it was fireworks. If it was shooting, a lot of shots were fired,” a Twitter user called Blake Bless tweeted.

Lt. Ibarra said the police urge witnesses to call (626) 744-4241.
