The Arroyo Singers announced that Dr. Alan Wellman will take over as Musical Director of the Group effective immediately. Wellman will be taking the baton from Dr. James Reitzell who retired this year after leading the group for 24 years.
Alan Wellman is a versatile conductor, singer, and teacher. As an innovative conductor, he has been responsible for the founding of one chorus, expanding and enhancing the vision of several community choruses, and collaborating with peers and colleagues for the benefit of music appreciation.
In 2013 and 2015 Dr. Wellman was selected as a conducting fellow at the Choral Institute in Oxford sponsored by Westminster Choir College and St. Stephen’s House at the University of Oxford, UK. Dr. Wellman was appointed Artistic Director of the Claremont Chorale for the 2018 season and previously served as Artistic Director of the Northwest Choral Society from 2010-17 and also served as the Choir Director at North Shore United Methodist Church.
Dr. Wellman is on the faculty of Polytechnic School in Pasadena and was previously on faculty at The Catherine Cook School in Chicago’s Old Town neighborhood and teaches a graduate choral literature course at the Graduate Theological Foundation.
His background includes a Doctor of Sacred Music from the Graduate Theological Foundation (Mishawaka, IN), a Master in Music in choral conducting from California State University—Los Angeles, and a Bachelor of Music—vocal/choral emphasis from Roosevelt University (Chicago, IL). He is currently a doctoral candidate at Concordia University—Chicago where his doctoral research is in the application of Adult Learning Theory to the Community Choral Rehearsal.
