No Mail Service and Most Banks Closed, But in Pasadena, Few Signs Monday is Columbus Day

Here’s What’s Opened and Closed on Columbus Day, Monday the 14th

There won’t be any mail carriers on local streets Monday, and most banks will be closed, but besides those two signs of the federal Columbus Day holiday, little else will change in Pasadena.

A Pasadena City official said that all City departments, including the Pasadena Public Library, Pasadena buses and trash pick up, will be up and running on regular schedules.

And the Pasadena Unified School District will be teaching children like any other school day.

Columbus Day is one of the 10 official federal holidays in the United States.

But in Los Angeles County, the Board of Supervisors unanimously voted in October 2017 to change the name of the holiday to Indigenous Peoples Day, to recognize the contributions, history, and sacrifices made by Native Americans, the original inhabitants of Los Angeles and this continent.

“While we cannot change the past, today’s action publicly recognizes that America’s ancestors oppressed Native Americans,” County Supervisor Hilda Solis said in May last year after passing an ordinance to effect the change. “Indigenous Peoples Day not only provides a reminder of the suffering of millions of Native Americans throughout our nation’s history, but also celebrates the tremendous achievements of the original inhabitants of our continent. This is not about erasing history. Rather, I hope parents and teachers use this opportunity to share this fuller understanding of our history to their children.”

Over the years, at least eight states and more than 100 cities (Pasadena is not among them) have voted to celebrate Indigenous Peoples Day on the second Monday of October, replacing of Columbus Day.

Although the U.S. Postal Service will be closed, private delivery companies, such as UPS and FedEx, will continue to deliver packages.

Metro will be running on a regular schedule, and most stores and businesses throughout Pasadena will be open.
