An emotionally distraught 68-year-old man held Pasadena police at bay with a handgun for four and a half hours Monday afternoon after a family argument, shutting down a normally quiet Hastings Ranch neighborhood near Don Benito Elementary School.

No one was injured during the incident. The school was closed for the Lincoln’s birthday holiday.

The man reportedly fired several rounds from the handgun into the ground.

Officers arriving on the scene in the 1200 block of M<edford Avenue about 3:30 p.m. learned from residents that the subject was alone inside the house but unwilling to surrender to the police.

Pasadena Police Crisis Negotiators (CNT) responded and the immediate neighbors were evacuated from their residences. The Pasadena Police Department SWAT Team was also summoned to the scene to assist.

After hours of negotiations with the suspect, police crisis negotiators
were able to convince him to surrender to Police. He did so voluntarily and as a result no one was injured.

The suspect is in police custody and criminal charges will be presented to the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office for filing consideration.

“I am extremely proud of my Officers that handled this incident and In particular my Crisis Negotiators, who were successful in de-escalating what potentially could have been a lethal encounter. The CNT Unit is comprised of highly dedicated men and women who discharge their duties with a high degree of competence. I am thankful that no one was injured,” Said Police Chief Phillip L. Sanchez.
