Not Just Board and Card Games: Altadena Library Goes with Playstation and Nintendo

Library games usually involve board and card games, but in Altadena they also include consoles and other electronic gadgets.

The Altadena Public Library will host its monthly Fun and Games Friday for children ages 11 to 17 years old on May 9 at 4:00 p.m. in its Barbara J. Pearson Community room.

Two projectors will be provided for the participants who will be playing video games. One is dedicated to Rock Band, a music-based game where players simulate the performance of popular rock music songs by playing with controllers modeled after musical instruments.

The other projector will be used to a Wii console where any attendee can choose a Wii game from the library’s own collection. The rent for each game is $2.

“I really love the fact that our library even holds something like Fun and Games Friday,” said Paula Gaetos, the library’s interim communications coordinator. “Growing up, my family couldn’t afford a video game console, so I really would’ve loved a free event like this as a young teen.”

Old classic board games such as Monopoly and Scrabble will still be present, as well as card games including UNO.

The participants are also encouraged to bring their handheld consoles, like a Playstation Vita or Nintendo 3DS, as well as card and board games to play and share with other children and teenagers at the library.

Gaetos said Fun and Games Friday is a way to show that the “library is more than just books and research.”

“It really shows the library is more than just books,” Gaetos said. “It’s a community space that caters to all ages.”

The event is open to the public and admission is free of charge. Light refreshments will be served.

The Altadena Library video game rentals are available seven days a week, and are open to all library card holders. Younger patrons who would like to rent games that are rated “M” for Mature must have a parent or guardian available.

The event is sponsored by the Friends of the Altadena Library, an organization dedicated to supporting the programs and services of the Altadena Library District. The purpose of the group is to stimulate public interest in the library, assist with funding to purchase library materials, and to support cultural and educational programs at the Altadena Library.

The Altadena Library District and its Youth Services Department offer a free and safe environment for its younger patrons to not only relax with a book or use the library as a research tool, but also to serve as a place where they can simply hang out and enjoy themselves in addition to their home and school environment.

Altadena Public Library is located at 600 East Mariposa St., Altadena. For more information, call (626) 798-0833 or visit http://www.altadenalibrary.org.
