A Pasadena-based group advocating for increased pedestrian safety is sponsoring a series of free community events to commemorate October as Pedestrian Safety Month in the city.

The Pasadena City Council made the declaration Monday, September 28th, with City Mayor Terry Tornek signing. October is also National Walking Month.

The Pasadena Complete Streets Coalition (PasCSC) will host the community events as part of the city’s first “Walktober,” designed to enhance awareness and encourage public participation in projects that enhance pedestrian safety.

As a kick-off to Walktober, PasCSC will hold its monthly Public Meeting on Monday, October 5, at PBWS Architects located at 234 E Colorado Blvd., Suite 700, Pasadena. Walking and biking enthusiasts will join PasCSC to discuss the latest in the world of active transportation, while identifying which streets and intersections are in greatest need of pedestrian improvements.

“The City is currently compiling a list of potential improvements and we need you input on this and more,” PasCSC said on its website.

Thursday, October 8, is “Walktoberfest” day, when members of the Downtown Pasadena Neighborhood Association, the Pasadena Transportation Commissioner, and expert walker Jonathan Edwards will lead a guided tour, providing participants an opportunity to learn more about Pasadena’s efforts at improving pedestrian safety.

Walkers will traverse the Pasadena Passages – a series of a series of alleyways, streets, and courtyards, which if linked via pedestrian improvements, have the potential to make the city’s downtown core even more unique and walkable. Walkers are asked to meet at 5 p.m. in front of the Pasadena Presbyterian Church, on the northeast corner of Colorado and Madison Avenues.

October 22 is Walk-In Movie Night at Day One, 175 N. Euclid Ave., just north of Pasadena City Hall and south of Walnut Avenue. Short films curated with a walking theme will be screened, and light healthy refreshments will be served. The starts at 7:00 p.m.
