To complement its live stage presentation of Little Women, the Off the Screen Series at Sierra Madre Playhouse will present midweek screenings of two film classics which are, like the play, set during the Civil War:
October, 23, 2019 at 7:00 p.m. Little Women. Family/Romance. Directed by George Cukor. Adapted for the screen by Sarah Y. Mason and Victor Heerman.Based on the novel by Louisa May Alcott. Directed by Merian C. Cooper. From RKO Radio Pictures. (Black-and-white, 1933, USA, 115 minutes, not rated) Starring Katharine Hepburn, Joan Bennett, Spring Byington, Edna May Oliver, Paul Lukas, Douglass Montgomery. Little Women is a “coming of age” drama tracing the lives of four sisters: Meg, Jo, Beth and Amy. During the American Civil War, the girls father is away serving as a minister to the troops. The family, headed by their beloved Marmee, must struggle to make ends meet, with the help of their kind and wealthy neighbor, Mr. Laurence, and his high-spirited grandson Laurie.

October 30 at 7:00 p.m. Glory. Biography/History. Directed by Edward Zwick. Written by Kevin Jarre. Based on the letters of Robert Gould Shaw and on books by Lincoln Kirstein and Peter Burchard. Produced by Freddie Fields. From Columbia TriStar.(Color, 1989, USA, 122 minutes, rated R) Starring Matthew Broderick, Denzel Washington, Cary Elwes, Morgan Freeman Jr., Jihni Kennedy, Andre Bruagher. Shaw was an officer in the Federal Army during the American Civil War who volunteered to lead the first company of black soldiers. Shaw was forced to deal with the prejudices of both the enemy (who had orders to kill commanding officers of blacks), and of his own fellow officers.
