OneWest Bank, the Pasadena-based Southern California retail bank division of CIT Group, launched a “Bank on Building a Brighter Community” project on Thursday to support and give back to local area school children as they head back to school.

As part of the project, OneWest will donate two-and-a-half hours of homework assistance to the Boys and Girls Clubs of Pasadena, Santa Monica, Moorpark and Simi Valley for every new qualifying checking account opened before October 15, a OneWest statement said.

Customers are also eligible to receive a $250 checking reward when they open a qualifying checking account and meet the requirements, according to the statement.

“We believe investing in our local students and our customers leads to a brighter community,” Heather Ellison, head of Retail Banking for OneWest Bank, said. “We are honored to extend our partnership with the Boys and Girls Club to help get kids off to a strong start this school year.”

Bank on Building a Brighter Community runs August 1 to October 15 and is part of the company’s ongoing efforts to build strong Southern California communities. OneWest has been an active supporter of the Boys and Girls Clubs since 2010 through volunteerism, grant funding and financial education.

“We all agree that this is a wonderful opportunity for our kids in Pasadena, Santa Monica, Moorpark and Simi Valley, and are grateful to partner with OneWest Bank,” Lisa Cavelier, CEO of the Boys and Girls Club of Pasadena, said. “It will enhance all our efforts toward academic success for our kids.”

CIT Group, based in New York, is involved in a variety of financing and leasing activities through hundreds of entities located all over the globe.

CIT Bank, the group’s retail banking entity, and OneWest Bank are headquartered at 75 North Fair Oaks Avenue in Pasadena and serve their customers solely through CIT’s online banking system.
