Opinion: Fresh Ideas and Fresh Coffee

I’ve had the tremendous opportunity over the last several months to talk to the people of Pasadena. At numerous meet-and-greets, my Jobs and Opportunity Forum, a telephone town hall and at neighborhood forums we’ve talked about the many challenges that face our city and how we can harness innovative thinking to confront those problems.

I’ve been impressed – but not surprised – by the level of civic engagement I’ve encountered. People in Pasadena know that as great as our city is, it can be even better. A number of voters have told me that it’s time for a new way of thinking about city government, particularly in light of recent events at City Hall involving long undiscovered theft of taxpayer dollars

Now this doesn’t mean we do away with what makes our city special or what works – but we can’t keep doing things the old way simply because that’s “how it’s always been done.” And I’ve been excited to hear residents of Pasadena share their ideas for how we can make government more accountable and transparent, create jobs, strengthen schools and improve public safety.

I believe strongly that we need to put in place the systems and leaders who will encourage continual participation and oversight by the people of Pasadena. It’s one reason I’ve used multiple forums and formats to reach out directly to voters. It’s why I was the only candidate in this race to file my campaign finance disclosure forms electronically to allow for easier and faster access by the public. And it’s why I’ve endorsed proposals for greater citizen engagement in our budgeting practices.

Because I am committed to doing everything I can to hear even more from the people of Pasadena, I’m inviting everyone to take a coffee break with me on Saturday, February 21 at 9:30 a.m. at Cameron’s (1978 East Colorado Blvd). You can RSVP on my website at www.Morgan2015.com/events.

It’ll be a chance for us to share a fresh cup of coffee and fresh ideas on how we can take what works, add what’s worked well in other cities and mix in creative policy generated from the brightest minds of our non-profit and private sector. It’s what I’ve been doing as a Professor of Public Policy at the University of Southern California and as a businessman who helps governments be more effective. And it’s what I’ll continue to do as the next mayor of Pasadena.

Together, we can achieve great things for every part of our city and make Pasadena the ultimate place to live, work and learn. I hope to see you soon!
