As PUSD continues to make reductions because of declining enrollment/flat revenues and increasing costs, while at the same time its employees naturally want increases in salary and no increases in out of pocket health care costs, it may be helpful to know what the current employee costs are.

Readers can find original budgeted amounts for salaries and benefits all employees for the current 17-18 school year here.

In addition, median salaries and total compensations (salaries plus district-contributed pension and health care costs and other benefits) are provided in red for each position title in our system. The number of work days for the different positions can be found here.

Below are the data for some of the positions most familiar to the public.

Teachers

The largest group of employees is of course teachers. There are 915 employees in our system that have one of 13 different position titles with the word teacher in the title, such as Teacher Elementary, Teacher Middle School, Teacher Secondary, . . .The median total compensation for 354 elementary teachers is $108,00 of which $77,000 is salary. For 127 middle school teachers the numbers are $108,000 and $82,000. For 190 secondary teachers they are $104,000 and $70,000. Teachers have 186 official work days per year and have low out of pocket costs for their individual and family health care, see here for those rates.

Counselors, Librarians, Nurses, Assistant Principals, Principals

Information is also provided for these 5 other positions that are familiar school site positions. For 23 counselors, who have 203 official work days, the numbers are $136,000 in median total compensation and $104,000 in median salary. For 8 librarians, who also have 203 work days, the numbers are $130,000 and $93,000. For 12 nurses, who have 186 work days, the numbers are $120,000 and $87,000. Counselors, librarians and nurses have the same low out of pocket costs for health care as teachers have. For 5 middle school assistant principals, who have 201 work days, they are $138,000 and $103,000. For 10 high school assistant principals, also with 201 work days, they are $142,000 and $103,000. For 6 high school principals, also with 218 work days, they are $170,000 and $132,000. These site administrators have somewhat higher out of pocket costs for health care, see here for those rates.

Central Office Management

At the central office management level, the numbers for 17 coordinators, who have 225 work days, are $148,000 in median total compensation and $116,000 in median salary. For 13 directors, also with 225 work days, they are $180,000 and $131,000. For 3 assistant superintendents, also with 225 work days, they are $215,000 and $162,000. These central administrators have the same rates for health care that site administrators have. For 6 chief officers they are $247,000 and $187,000. For the Superintendent they are $347,000 and $265,000.

In looking over the data at the link, the reader will see that PUSD has over 2100 employees in many job roles. We encourage the reader to view them as we endeavor to make the budget more transparent (and unfortunately make more reductions to balance our budget.) There will be more effort to make the budget more transparent in the coming months.
