Pacific Oaks College & Children’s School, one of the nation’s leading pioneers in the study of education and human development, will be able to further advance its mission thanks to a $103,200 grant from The Fletcher Jones Foundation. The grant funds will be awarded as stipends to students enrolled in Pacific Oaks’ School of Education during the student teaching required portion of their program.

The Fletcher Jones Foundation grant plays an important role in supporting Pacific Oaks’ goal to provide non-traditional students with additional funding during the unpaid student teaching requirement of a credential program. Over a three to six-year period, each student enrolled in a graduate or undergraduate program leading to teaching credentials will be awarded $1200 during their student teaching assignment. By facilitating a lower financial burden, the grant award allows the College to immediately address the teacher shortage in critical areas of education in California, including Special Education. As part of Pacific Oaks’ mission, the stipend will continue to draw a diverse student population, including those from an economically disadvantaged background, who are needed in the teaching profession.

“Education is the key to advancement for traditionally underserved populations, including women, minorities, immigrants, working adults, first generation college students, and individuals for whom English is a second language,” said Dr. Patricia A. Breen, Ph.D., President of Pacific Oaks College & Children’s School. “Pacific Oaks is committed to offering an economically, culturally, and socially inclusive learning opportunity, which we feel will promote learning and advancement across all constituencies.”

The Fletcher Jones Foundation grant award represents another achievement in what is shaping to be a milestone year for Pacific Oaks College. The College recently purchased the property in which the College resides in Northwest Pasadena, further solidifying its roots in an area of Pasadena that is economically diverse and has a history within the social justice movement. By providing student teaching stipends through the grant awarded by the Fletcher Jones Foundation, the College strives to create greater diversity in the education profession and train more teachers in Pacific Oaks’ anti-bias and progressive education and pedagogy.
