The La Cañada Presbyterian Church’s (LCPC’s) Parent Education Program recently donated 10% of its fundraising proceeds, $4,014 in total, to Pawsitivity Service Dogs. Proceeds were raised through the annual LCPC Parent Ed Fundraiser in February, 2018.

Pawsitivity is a not for profit organization based out of Minnesota that rescues and trains dogs to assist people, often children, with developmental and physical disabilities. Dogs complete an extensive two-year training before they are then placed with children and adults throughout the United States. Parent Ed learned of Pawsitivity through its partnership with long time participants, Jason and Jasmine Dematteis, who son Jude, age 4, suffers from medical posttraumatic stress disorder. In May of this year, the So Cal Honda Dealers provided the necessary funding to have Pawsitiity provide service dog, Grady, to Jude. Grady has been a blessing to the Dematteis family and to Jude as he continues to receive necessary treatment for chronic medical conditions. In Jasmine’s words, “Grady has healed our family in immeasurable ways, he is the best medicine for Jude, and our twins, Jack and Jenna. He is the most loving creature and has helped mend all of our hearts and souls. Even on the tough days where Jude is in pain, he is happier because of Grady, and that’s everything!”

Parent Ed’s additional fundraising and outreach efforts this year have included over $4,000 raised for participant scholarships through the Founders’ Fund, named in honor of Parent Ed founders: Annie Latte Krach, Gail Hanson, and Claudia Zentmyer. Additionally, over $6,000 was donated in honor of Christopher Erskine (son of Chris and Cathy Erskine) who died earlier this year Parent LCPC Education has used the money to establish the Christopher Erskine Compassion Memorial which will be an ongoing memorial to support individuals and families “in honor of Christopher’s generous spirit.” In December, the program also participated in Operation Christmas Child collecting around 300 boxes to be distributed internationally.
