Parson’s Nose Theater in Pasadena will be presenting “Too Learned Ladies,” a new adaptation of Moliere’s comedy by Lance Davies, beginning with “Pay What You Will” Previews on February 2, 3, and 9. Regular performances begin on February 10 – March 4, on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays.

Moliere’s “Les Femmes Savantes” (The Learned Ladies) premiered at the Théâtre du Palais-Royal on March 11, 1672. The comedy is in five acts, written in verse, and treats academic pretension, female education, and préciosité (French for preciousness). It was one of Moliere’s most popular comedies, where two young people, Henriette and Clitandre, are in love, but in order to marry, must overcome an obstacle: the attitude of Henriette’s family. Her sensible father and uncle are in favour of the marriage; but unfortunately her father is under the thumb of his wife, Philaminte. And Philaminte, supported by Henriette’s aunt and sister, wishes her to marry Trissotin, a “scholar” and mediocre poet with lofty aspirations, who has these three women completely in his thrall. For these three ladies are “learned”; their obsession in life is learning and culture of the most pretentious kind, and Trissotin is their special protégé and the fixture of their literary salon.

In Davies’ adaptation, the ladies of the Parnell Household are on their quest for knowledge. Unfortunately, their tutor is full of something – and it isn’t knowledge. When the eldest daughter wants to be married rather than live out her days with books, the household erupts with chaos. Her father supports her marriage but her mother has other plans.

The cast includes Lance Davis as Chrysale, Jill Rogosheske as Philaminte, Hannah Mae Sturges as Armande, Kyla Schoer as Henriette, Frazier Perez Yadon as Clitandre, Paul Perri as Ariste, James Calvert as Martine/Vadius/Notary, John Rafter Lee as Trissotin and Dorothy Brooks as Belise.

“Pay What you Will” tickets are priced from $5.00 – $25.00. General performance tickets are $15.00/student, $20.00/senior, and $30.00/adult. For more information, call (626) 403-7667 or visit www.parsonsnose.com.
