Pasadena Deltas Present a “Celebration of Excellence”

The Pasadena Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority has given nearly $375,000 in academic awards

On Sunday, May 22, 2011, the Altadena Senior Center was filled with community members, elected officials, school personnel, family and friends as the Pasadena Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. hosted its annual reception in honor of the 2011 Academic Award Recipients.

The room was beautifully decorated by Scarlet Flowers Designs setting the stage for the program, which was opened by President Kathy Murrell. The invocation was bestowed by Chaplain Yvonne Brown and a motivating keynote address was delivered by Dr. Yvette Latunde, Assistant Professor and Coordinator of Clinical Practice at Azusa Pacific University. Ms. Murrell presented community service monetary awards to Reading Is Fundamental and the Global AIDS Interfaith Alliance.

Denise Jones, Academic Awards Committee Chairperson, and members of the Pasadena Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. presented awards, in the amount of $1,000 each, to the following deserving and accomplished students: Anita Johnson Cole Commemorative to Shya Wyatt – John Muir High School,  Carolyn Edwards Jones Commemorative to Emani Holyfield – Flintridge Preparatory School, Houlemard Family to Ashley Gasper – LaSalle High School; Jane Strong-Moses & Jesse Moses Commemorative to Justina Walker – Marshall Fundamental Secondary School, Jean & Clarence Mills Family to David Burton – Harvard-Westlake School, Mabel Lockett Martin Commemorative to Crandalyn Jackson – Maranatha High School, McMullins Family to Daphnee Stowers – Pasadena High School, Nelle Kigh Thompson Commemorative to Jesse Laney – Pasadena High School, Presidents’ Commemorative to Brianna Atkins – Marshall Fundamental Secondary School and Willie Mae Hooks Lewis Commemorative to Kyra Price – Westridge School.  Pyramid Academic Awards, in the amount of $500 each, were presented to DeShawn Samad – Flintridge Sacred Heart Academy and Imani Allison – Pasadena High School. One of the 2010 Academic Award Recipient, Tianna Jones, attended the reception and gave their insights on her experiences in the year of college to the upcoming freshman students.

Certificates or letters of commendation were received by each award winner from the offices of Congressman Adam Schiff, Senator Carol Liu, Assemblyman Anthony Portantino, Supervisor Michael Antonovich, Mayor Bill Bogaard and Councilmember Jacque Robinson.

The Pasadena Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. has given nearly $375,000 in academic awards to worthy students for the pursuit of post secondary education over the last forty-seven years. In addition to educational development, the Pasadena Alumnae Chapter has provided services in the areas of economic development, physical and mental health and political and international awareness/involvement since its chartering on January 27, 1961.

The Academic Awards Committee consists of Kathy Murrell – Chapter President, Denise Jones – Chair, Christina Bentley, Myra Booker, Johari DeWitt-Rogers, Dianne Lewis, Ellen Ligons, Lindsey Malcom, Gwendolyn McMullins, Kathy Pentecost, Rayne Stewart, Alma Stokes Carlette Thompson, Esther Watkins, Sylvia Wiggins.
