The City of Pasadena’s Department of Human Services and Recreation will lead the celebration of Fiestas Patrias this year, happening at the Villa Parke Community Center, at 363 E. Villa Street in Pasadena, on Friday, September 13, from 5 to 9 p.m.

The annual event is a celebration of the independence of 18 Latin American countries which were all former colonies of Spain.

Every year, children, families and neighbors come together to celebrate and enjoy this festival, which includes live music, dance performances, and children’s activities. The celebration also typically features the Parade of Flags from all of the 18 Latin American countries – Argentina, Belize, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Mexico, Nicaragua, Panama, Paraguay, Peru, Uruguay and Venezuela.

It also features the crowning of a new Fiestas Patrias Queen by City officials, children’s art activities and boxing and jujitsu demonstrations.

“It’s a patriotic holiday that we are glad to celebrate because it recognizes the Latin heritage that runs deep in Pasadena,” said Fausto de la Torre, Villa Parke’s Boxing Specialist and long-time event co-organizer. “It’s really nice that Pasadena still embraces all of these different cultural backgrounds. It helps create a sense of community.”

During past Fiestas Patrias celebrations, the City of Pasadena has made sure residents and visitors are properly provided with all the necessary information on various services and programs in the community, as well as food and beverages.

All fun games aside, the festival also becomes an outlet for the community, especially the children, to learn about their heritage and history, ask questions and be educated about who they are, where they come from and why the event is celebrated.

It’s a day where Latinos in Pasadena and nearby areas can come together as a union, Dela Torre said.
