Pasadena’s Department of Public Health celebrated National Public Health Week between April 4 and 8, 2016, with several activities to promote public health excellence within the public health workforce.

Michael Johnson, Director of Public Health, said the week started with a kick-off breakfast where three-time Olympic track and field medalist and Pasadena native Alice Brown-Harris was guest speaker.

The week also included presentations by the Public Health Department on its changing role and functions within the San Gabriel Valley Health Consortium and the Pasadena City of Learning.

Midweek, staff participated in a “healthy food tasting” experience provided by the Nutrition Program staff.

The week ended with a special screening of the documentary series “The Raising of America,” which explores how early child health equity is critical for the future of our nation’s health. A discussion followed about the film and how the Department and community members can work together to support child health requirements.

National Public Health Week, sponsored by the American Public Health Association, is held annually to promote the role of public health in protecting the health of the nation.
