The Pasadena Community Orchestra has opened its application period for the PCO Young Artist Competition, which has been identifying, assisting, and featuring talented young musicians since 1986 as they pursue their musical career and education.

Contestants between the ages of 16 and 25 who perform on piano or a standard orchestral instrument can enter the competition and have a chance to win a $500 cash award and appear as guest soloist with the PCO on May 11, 2018.

Auditions are scheduled for Saturday, February 3, 2018, at a location in Pasadena that’s yet to be determined.

At the auditions, contestants must be ready to perform an entire concerto or solo work with orchestral accompaniment; judges will determine which portions of the work will be performed at the competition. All music must be performed from memory; the judges may request any portion of the music and may terminate any audition without prejudice to the performer.

If the judges determine that no contestant attains an adequate standard of excellence to perform with the orchestra, they could recommend that no one is selected.

Each contestant must appear for the audition at the scheduled time.

Contestants must perform with accompaniment and must provide their own accompanist and one copy of the score for the judges.

Application forms must be submitted by mail by January 20, 2018. Online submission forms are accessible at A registration fee of $60 must accompany the completed print entry form. The fee cannot be refunded once the application has been accepted. An additional fee of $2.75 applies to online applications.

The filled application form and registration fee may be mailed to Young Artist Competition, 1020 S. 5th St., Montebello, CA 90640. The contestant is responsible for applying on time. Due to limited audition times, only the first 12 applications will be accepted.

The judges are selected by the Young Artists Audition Committee. Any teacher entering a student in this audition will not be eligible to serve as a judge. The decision of the judges is final and irrevocable. Judging is based on outstanding performance and suitability to the orchestra. The age of a contestant is not a consideration.
